Lenses built for your eyes

Not every eye is the same, and not every lens will work for every patient. We fit specialty lenses designed for complex prescriptions, irregular corneas, and conditions that standard contacts simply cannot address.

If you have been told you cannot wear contacts, or if standard lenses leave you uncomfortable and frustrated, specialty lenses may be the answer. We take the time to find the right fit for your unique needs.

Each lens is custom-designed using advanced corneal mapping and topography. The result is a lens that fits precisely, corrects effectively, and feels comfortable from morning to night.

Lens Options

Specialty lens types we fit

We offer a comprehensive range of specialty lens designs. Your doctor will recommend the best option based on your corneal shape, visual needs, and lifestyle.

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses

RGP lenses are made from a firm, oxygen-permeable material that holds its shape on the eye. Because they maintain a consistent optical surface, they often deliver sharper vision than soft lenses, especially for patients with astigmatism or irregular corneas.

These lenses are durable, easy to care for, and allow excellent oxygen flow to the cornea. They are a great long-term option for patients who want crisp, reliable vision without the limitations of soft contacts.

Most Requested

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas-permeable lenses that vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the white of the eye (the sclera). This design creates a smooth optical surface and traps a reservoir of tear fluid between the lens and your cornea.

Full Scleral

The largest diameter option. Provides maximum corneal clearance and the biggest tear fluid reservoir. Ideal for severely irregular corneas and advanced dry eye.

Mini-Scleral

Slightly smaller than full scleral lenses but still vaults completely over the cornea. A good balance of comfort, stability, and easier handling for many patients.

Semi-Scleral

The smallest of the scleral family. Rests near the junction of the cornea and sclera. Works well for mild to moderate irregularities and patients newer to specialty lenses.

Why patients love scleral lenses:

  • The trapped tear film acts as a fluid reservoir, keeping the cornea hydrated all day long
  • Gas-permeable material allows oxygen to reach the cornea for healthy, comfortable wear
  • Vaulting design means the lens never touches the cornea, making them comfortable even for sensitive eyes
  • Excellent for dry eye, corneal irregularities, and post-surgical eyes

Limbal Fit Contact Lenses

Limbal fit lenses rest at the border between the cornea and the sclera (the limbus). They are larger than standard RGP lenses but smaller than scleral lenses, offering a middle ground between traditional and scleral designs.

These lenses provide improved stability and comfort compared to smaller RGP lenses, while being easier to insert and remove than full scleral lenses. They work well for patients who need better centration and less lens movement.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine the best of both worlds: a rigid gas-permeable center for sharp, clear vision, surrounded by a soft lens skirt for comfort and stability. The RGP center corrects vision with precision, while the soft edge keeps the lens centered and comfortable throughout the day.

These are an excellent option for patients who want the visual clarity of an RGP lens but prefer the wearing experience of a soft contact. They are especially popular with patients transitioning from soft lenses who need better vision correction.

Ortho-K (Overnight Reshaping)

Orthokeratology lenses are specially designed rigid gas-permeable lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. In the morning, you remove the lenses and enjoy clear vision throughout the day without glasses or contacts.

Ortho-K is also used as a myopia management strategy for children. Learn more on our myopia management page.

Conditions We Treat

Who benefits from specialty lenses?

Specialty contact lenses can make a real difference for patients dealing with conditions that standard lenses and glasses cannot fully address.

Dry Eye Disease

Scleral lenses bathe the cornea in a constant layer of tears, providing all-day relief from dryness and discomfort.

Keratoconus

Specialty lenses create a smooth optical surface over the irregular, cone-shaped cornea, restoring clear vision that glasses cannot provide.

Corneal Scarring

The tear-filled vault of a scleral or RGP lens masks surface irregularities caused by scarring, allowing light to focus properly again.

Strabismus

Custom contact lenses can be part of a management plan for misaligned eyes, helping to improve visual function and comfort.

Eye Injuries

After trauma or surgery that changes the shape of the cornea, specialty lenses can restore vision and protect the healing surface.

Post-Surgical Eyes

Patients who have had corneal transplants, LASIK complications, or other eye surgeries often find specialty lenses deliver the best possible vision.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are scleral lenses?
Scleral lenses are large-diameter, gas-permeable contact lenses that vault over the entire cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye). They create a smooth optical surface and a fluid reservoir that keeps the eye hydrated, making them ideal for irregular corneas and severe dry eye.
Are specialty lenses comfortable?
Most patients find specialty lenses surprisingly comfortable, especially scleral lenses. Because they do not touch the cornea and maintain a cushion of saline solution, many patients report them being more comfortable than standard contacts.
How long do they last?
With proper care, scleral and RGP lenses can last 1 to 2 years or longer. Daily cleaning and regular follow-up visits ensure optimal performance and eye health throughout the life of the lenses.
