Legacy Wave IPL

Intense Pulsed Light therapy that targets the inflammation driving your dry eye symptoms — not just the symptoms themselves.

The Science

How IPL works

Intense Pulsed Light therapy delivers controlled, broad-spectrum light pulses to the skin around your eyes. The Legacy Wave system features integrated cooling technology that protects the skin surface while the light energy penetrates to the target tissue beneath.

The light energy is selectively absorbed by abnormal blood vessels and inflammatory mediators around the eyelids. This reduces the chronic inflammation that damages meibomian glands and disrupts your tear film. IPL also helps eliminate Demodex mites and bacterial biofilm on the eyelids — two common contributors to persistent dry eye.

Over a series of treatments, IPL breaks the cycle of inflammation, allowing your meibomian glands to recover and produce the healthy oils your tear film needs.

Your Visit

What to expect

IPL treatment is quick, comfortable, and requires no downtime.

01

Before Treatment

Dr. Ngo performs a comprehensive dry eye evaluation including meibography imaging of your glands. You will be asked to avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products for two weeks before treatment. Protective eye shields are placed before the procedure begins.

02

During Treatment

A thin layer of coupling gel is applied to the treatment area. The Legacy Wave handpiece delivers a series of gentle light pulses from ear to ear across the cheeks and nose. Most patients describe it as a warm, gentle snap. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes.

03

After Treatment

You can return to normal activities immediately. Mild redness may occur and typically resolves within a few hours. Sunscreen is recommended for the treated area. Most patients complete 3 to 4 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart for optimal results.

Applications

Conditions treated with IPL

IPL is effective for a range of conditions that contribute to chronic dry eye and eyelid inflammation.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

The leading cause of evaporative dry eye. IPL reduces the inflammation that damages these critical oil glands.

Ocular Rosacea

Chronic redness and inflammation of the eyelids and ocular surface associated with rosacea respond well to IPL.

Blepharitis

Chronic eyelid inflammation caused by bacteria and biofilm buildup. IPL helps reduce bacterial load and inflammation.

Demodex Infestation

Microscopic mites that live in eyelash follicles and contribute to chronic irritation. IPL light energy helps eliminate these parasites.

The Evidence

Backed by clinical research

IPL for dry eye is supported by a growing body of peer-reviewed clinical evidence. Multiple studies demonstrate significant, measurable improvement in both symptoms and objective tear film metrics.

Key findings across studies

Improved tear breakup time

Consistent increases in TBUT, indicating more stable tear film after treatment.

Reduced symptom scores

Significant improvement in OSDI and SPEED questionnaire scores across multiple studies.

Lower inflammatory markers

Measurable reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines in tear fluid after IPL treatment.

Long-lasting results

Benefits sustained for months after completing a treatment series, with maintenance sessions extending results further.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IPL treatment hurt?
Most patients describe IPL as very comfortable. The Legacy Wave system features integrated cooling technology that keeps the skin surface cool during treatment. You may feel a gentle warm snap with each pulse, similar to a light rubber band snap. The vast majority of patients tolerate it easily without any numbing or anesthesia.
How many sessions will I need?
A typical initial treatment course consists of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Many patients notice improvement after the first or second session. After completing the initial series, periodic maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months can help sustain your results.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime. You can return to your normal activities, including work and driving, immediately after treatment. Some patients experience mild redness in the treated area that typically resolves within a few hours. We recommend wearing sunscreen on the treated area for a few days following each session.
Who is a good candidate for IPL?
IPL is well-suited for patients with chronic dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, blepharitis, or Demodex-related irritation. It works across a range of skin types, though Dr. Ngo will evaluate your specific situation during a consultation to confirm that IPL is appropriate for you. Patients who are pregnant, have active skin infections, or are on certain photosensitizing medications may not be candidates.
How long do results last?
Many patients experience lasting relief for 6 to 12 months after completing their initial treatment series. Because dry eye is a chronic condition, periodic maintenance sessions can help sustain and extend your results. Combining IPL with MiBo Thermoflo and LLLT as part of our Dry Eye Trifecta tends to produce the longest-lasting outcomes.
Is IPL safe for the eyes?
Yes. IPL for dry eye is performed by trained eye care professionals using medical-grade equipment specifically designed for periocular use. Your eyes are protected with opaque shields throughout the procedure. The Legacy Wave system's integrated cooling and calibrated energy settings are designed to deliver effective treatment with an excellent safety profile.
