When glasses stop keeping up
In keratoconus the cornea thins and bulges into a cone. Glasses cannot correct that uneven shape, so vision keeps slipping.
- Night driving gets harder, and headlights streak or smear.
- A new glasses prescription helps for a few months, then stops helping.
- Soft contacts feel fine but do not make anything sharper.
Lenses help you see. They do not stop keratoconus.
We measure the shape of your cornea and compare it at later visits. Keratoconus that is still changing is most common in teenagers and young adults.
The procedure that slows it is corneal cross-linking, done by corneal surgeons. If your cornea is still changing, we talk with you about a referral while we work on your lenses.
Keratoconus in the Tri-Cities: FAQ
Is there a keratoconus doctor in Kennewick or Richland?
We do not have an office in Kennewick or Richland. Our doctors see keratoconus patients at our Pasco office, 4820 N Rd 68 inside Walmart, which is about 14 minutes from Kennewick, 13 from Richland and 18 from West Richland. Call (509) 543-7953.
Can glasses correct keratoconus?
In early keratoconus, often yes. As the cornea becomes more irregular, glasses cannot correct the uneven shape, and many people need a rigid, hybrid or scleral contact lens to see clearly. Which one is right is decided at the exam.
Do contact lenses stop keratoconus from getting worse?
No. Lenses correct how you see; they do not change the cornea. The procedure that slows keratoconus is corneal cross-linking, done by corneal surgeons. If your cornea is still changing, we talk with you about a referral alongside your lenses.
My teenager was just diagnosed. What should we do?
Keratoconus that is still progressing is most common in teenagers and young adults, so the cornea needs to be measured again over time. Call us and we will set up an evaluation, look for signs of change and talk about a cross-linking referral if the cornea is still changing.
Do I need a referral?
No, you can call us directly. We also accept referrals from optometrists, ophthalmologists and corneal specialists, and we send our findings back to the referring doctor.
Does insurance cover keratoconus care?
Sometimes. Some medical and vision plans cover contact lenses that are medically necessary for keratoconus, at a different benefit level from routine contacts. It depends on your plan and your diagnosis, so we check your benefits and give you the cost in writing before any lens is ordered.
Can I be seen in Sunnyside or Hermiston instead?
Yes. Our doctors also fit lenses for keratoconus at our Sunnyside office, (509) 839-4575, and our Hermiston office, (541) 567-5283.
Do you have Spanish-speaking help?
Yes. Spanish interpreters are available at all of our offices. Se habla español.
